Background We continued to follow the footprints of our ancestors along the East African corridor of the cradle of humanity. Our initial re-connection was established in the highlands of Ethiopia 2003-2004 and in the winter of 2004-2005 we visited Kenya, Tanzania and Zanzibar. We now bear witness to the presence of Zinjanthropus boise (nut-cracker man, 1.75 million years old); we gazed upon majestic Mount Meroe and Kilamanjaro; drove through the Rift Valley; marveled at Lake Manyara; descended into Ngorongoro Crater Lake with all of the Creator's majestic creations, the Garden of Eden...if there were a place identified as such; we communed with our distinguished Maasai family; visited the Oldupai Gorge, the most important barameter for all mankind with its distinctive five-layered bed of geological time frame (2 million to 800,000 years); among many other memorable places. On our next step (Winter 2006) to trace the African footprints on the sands of time we journey to South Africa, Transvaal area, the beginning of the Rift Valley, followed by a necessary visit to the Great Enclosure of Zimbabwe. Zimbabwe is the home of the San Khoi Khoi people, some of our ancient ancestors, the distinguished Shona, and the Ndebele peoples. While in South Africa, one must witness the breathtaking brilliance of nature in Cape Town, Cape Point, the convergence of the Atlantic and Indian Oceans, the infamous Robben Island made famous by Nelson Mandela, nature’s wonder of Table Mountain, the Black Townships, and Malay Quarters. In
Johannesburg we will visit the Hector Peterson Memorial Museum, which marks
June 16, 1976, the day of infamy. On this day, the architects of apartheid
committed murder in cold blood by shooting the 10-year old Hector
Peterson and others as they protested the imposition of Afrikaans as the
language of instruction in their schools. Nelson and
Winnie Mandela’s homes are also highlights of our contemporary investigation in Soweto. Our tour won’t be complete without visiting the great Shona people and their exquisite stone carvings. Equally brilliant are the Ndebele women with their intricate geometric designs on their homes and compounds, plus their magnificent bead work The Mighty Victoria Falls with its spellbinding fury and grace is one that we must gaze upon. Mozambique, Botswana, Zambia, and Namibia are next-door neighbors. During our visit we will examine more great history as well as delight in the cultural traditions of our brothers and sisters of Southern Africa. Daily Itinerary Day 1.
