WELCOME STATEMENT: This Nile Valley educational study tour to Ethiopia takes us to the land where time began and the birthplace of Dinknesh---the mother of all mankind. Ethiopia still holds the distinction as the place of Orthodox Christianity and the victorious Battle of Adwa. Join us as we visit Addis Ababa, the tallest standing tekenu (obelisk) of Axum, magnificent rock-cut churches at Lalibela, the church of Debre Berhan Selassie, adorned with painted Black angels in the ceiling, Lake Tana, the palace of Queen Makeda, Gondar Castles, Tissisat Falls, Ethiopia's breathtaking landscapes, mountainscapes, and more...

where he teaches the History of African Art among other courses about

Day 1
- Depart from JFK (NY) International Airport for tri-state travelers,
then unto Dulles, Washington, DC.
Day 2
- Arrive in Addis Ababa, be met at the airport. Hotel check-in. Evening
orientation. Dinner. Day 3 - City tour of Addis Ababa, the capital of Ethiopia, Visit National Museum to see remains of Dinknesh (Lucy), dating 3.5 million years; Trinity Cathedral, known for its notable paintings, murals, beautiful stained glass windows and tombs of prominent figures including Emperor Haile Selassie; Ethnological Museum, Mount Entoto to see stupendous view of the city and visit Mercato, the largest open marketplace in Africa. Day 4
- Early morning flight to Axum, transfer to hotel. Afternoon visit to
the tallest standing tekenu (obelisk), monolith, hewn from a single
piece of granite. See the granite stone tombs of the ancient Axumite
Kings, the palace of Queen Makeda (Queen of Sheba). See the 16th century
Cathedral
of Mary Sion (St. Mary of Zion)
that houses the
Ark of the Covenant. See the Adwa Hills
where the Ethiopian army defeated Italy at the Battle of Adwa. Evening
lecture.
(B/D) Day 5 - Flight to Lalibela. Hotel check-in. Visit the site of the eleven rock-hewn monolithic churches built by the Ethiopian King Lalibela (12th/13th century). See 800-year old African Ethiopian Holy Books. Evening lecture. (B/D)
Day 6
- Continue visit to churches at Lalibela. Early afternoon flight to
Gondar, Hotel check-in. Visit the compound of medieval castles. See the
baths, palaces and residences of King Fasiladas used for the annual
Timket or Epiphany celebration. Visit the Church of Debre Berhan
Selassie (Light of the Trinity) to see African frescos/murals Ethiopian
religious icons; Visit the African Agaw, Beta Israel (Falasha) people
(descendants of Solomon and Queen Makeda (Queen of Sheba). Evening
lecture.

Day 7
- Continue with Gondar sites. Depart for Bahar Dar, located on the
shores of Lake Tana, Hotel check-in. Boat ride over Lake Tana to visit
the ancient island Monastery of Ura Kidane Mihret (containing frescos,
elaborately painted ceiling, church crosses, crowns and attire of former
Ethiopian Kings. See the tankwas, which resemble the papyrus boats
carved on the temples of Egypt. Evening lecture.

- Morning visit to the majestic
Tissisat Falls.
Departure to Addis Ababa. Hotel check-in Evening folkloric
entertainment and traditional Ethiopian meal and drink.

- Free time for shopping in Addis Ababa. Afternoon transfer to airport
for return flight to the United States.
